CRASH KILLS RETIRED MAN

W.P. Austin, Sr., 86, of 317 Twelfth Street Drive, NW, Hickory, a former city councilman and who served as mayor and on the town board of West Hickory before it became part of Hickory, was fatally injured in a two-car traffic accident on Highway 321 five-tenths of a mile north of Granite Falls at 3:15 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Austin, Caldwell County's twelth traffic fatality in 1970, died in a Hickory hospital at 7:15 o'clock Saturday from his injuries.
Also injured in the crash were his wife, Ethel Fowler Austin, 83. Gail Presnell Hyde, 19, and Franklin Hyde, 31, both of Route One, Valdese. Mrs. Austin, treated at Richard Baker hospital was able to go home after treatment.
The Hydes were released from Caldwell Memorial hospital, Lenoir, following first-aid treatment.
State Trooper Odell Church said Mrs. Hyde traveled north on Highway 321 in a 1965 Ford and that Mr. Austin, driving a 1957 Oldsmobile, pulled out from rural paved 1109 an into the path of the Hyde vehicle.
Damage to the Hyde car was estimated at $600, to the Austin vehicle, $400.
Mr. Austin was born in Alexander County May 8, 1884, the son of the late Waitzell and Hulda Bowman Austin.
Surviving in edition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. Clara Conger of Blowing Rock and Mrs. John Reid and Mrs. Foy Sherrill, both of Hickory; four sons, Carl Austin, W.P. Austin, Jr., Waitzell Austin and Brice Austin, all of Hickory; two sisters, Mrs. Mose Cline of Taylorsville and Mrs. Robert Reed of Lenoir; a brother, Partee Austin of Taylorsville; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Austin was one of the oldest active members of Bethany Lutheran Church, which he joined when it was organized. He was also a member of the Bethany Men's Sunday School class, which he attended regularly. He was a mason.
In addition to serving the municipality of West Hickory, Mr. Austin served several terms on the Hickory City Council.
Mr. Austin went into the retail grocery business as a young man in Alexander County and moved to Hickory in 1910 and continued in this line of business until his retirement.
During Hickory's recent Centennial Mr. Austin was honored as the oldest living past city councilman present.
Funeral rites were conducted at Bethany Lutheran Church at three o'clock this afternoon by the Rev. Ralph Luman.
Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Bass-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
