Things would change for Ada when she was in Blackfoot, Idaho with her family. It seems that her mother was in an accident when she was about 14, and since then had periods of epilepsy. When they were in Blackfoot, Matilda was found wandering in the streets, looking bewildered. She was taken to the nearby hospital by someone passing by. While she was in the hospital, her last child was born.
William Rowley was beside himself as what to do about the whole thing. He had 4 children, and was not sure he could handle all of them. The county in Blackfoot at this time had a program to take care of poor and indigent children. One of those in charge of helping these children was Mrs. Rebecca Briley. Her and her husband, James R. Briley were married in 1881.
Rebecca had two step children, Minnie and Mae. Minnie died in October 1890 from influenza. Mae was married in 1892 in Blackfoot, Id. Rebecca had a love and compassion for children also, Clarence, David, and Elizabeth were a bit older and stayed with their father.
In 1892, Rebecca Briley adopted the 5 children. Her husband had some mental issues from being a soldier and was placed in a hospital around 1894.
At this time Rebecca thought it was time to leave Blackfoot and have a new start for her and the children.
Rebecca Briley took the 5 children, including the adopted Briley children, Ada, William and Ella, and went to the Okanogan Valley in Washington. She moved into a small house where the local church in Loomis was located. She took in washing and the children did local chores in the area.
Rebecca Briley married David Smith in 1900. David had some land and livestock. The children learned to handle the livestock and horses were their favorite. Ada spent her younger years helping on the farm.
Elizabeth and her father William Rowley also moved to the Okanogan area. Some have said that William Sr. abandoned the three children, but it might be that he figured that he could not take care of all the children and that Rebecca would do a better job.
When Ada was about 19, she married George Riste in Okanogan,26 Mar 1905.
George Riste was born in Toulon, Illinois, 29 Oct 1866. His father was Joseph Sherrick Riste and mother Sarah Garver. George had 10 siblings.
In 1913, Ada was bed ridden with diphtheria. They were living in Molson at that time. Ada loved her horses, dogs, and of course her guns. She enjoyed riding horses from an early age with her brother and sister on the David Smith Ranch.
Ada's father William passed away in 1949, being 100 years old.
Ada lived in Oroville and she married Homer McGuire 25th April 1951 in Oroville,Wa. Homer was born 1873 and died in 1956.
Ada continued to live in Oroville. She passed away on the 8th of Dec, 1963. She is buried in the Oroville Cemetery.
