Kenneth Mahon was a Police Officer in New York City, New York, for 7 years. He was assigned to the 41st Precinct's Anti-Crime Unit. He had been an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He died in the line of duty at age 29. Officer Mahon and his partner were attempting to question a suspect about a robbery and rape that happened the day before. Two other suspects were arrested and had given detectives the name and address of two other suspects. When the Officers arrived at the location on Southern Avenue, they observed a man in the Courtyard and attempted to question him. The man immediately ran into a building and opened fire, striking Officer Mahon several times. The suspect was taken into custody by several other Officers. Officer Mahon was transported to Lincoln Hospital, where he died a short time later. The suspect who shot him turned out to be connected to a previous robbery. Officer Mahon was survived by a wife, 3 year old daughter, parents, and sister.
