Superior Editor Taken by Death

A. S. Berry, publisher of the Superior Journal, died suddenly Monday evening, Sept 17, the result of a heart attack. Mr Berry had been ill a short time, but it was not generally known that his illness was of a serious nature. He was attacked while sitting at the supper table and died before a physician could reach him.

Mr Berry suffered an attack the week prior while he was at work at the Journal office. His doctor ordered him to remain in bed, but he was far too active a man to be content with being cooped up in a sick room, and he returned to his office before the end of the week.

Such energetic devotion to the job of newspaper publishing was characteristic of the man's career. Many are the times he was seen working late at night in his office, even to the small hours of morning. He was a slave to his work. In spite of his advancing years, he was always in the thick of things when news was breaking, preferring to go himself instead of sending a younger member of the staff.

Mr Berry was possessed of a keen mind and wrote with a great deal of positiveness and conviction. He used his pen capably to support the things in which he believed and conversely, wrote fiercely in oppositon (sic) to what ever he believed was wrong or harmful. He was a leader in the prohibition ranks.

Aaron Schuyler Berry, son of Aquilla W. and Sarah Brungard Berry was born June 1, 1873 in Clinton county (sic), Pa. At the age of five, he came to Jewell City, Kan., where the family resided until after the death of the mother when they moved to Gove county (sic), Kan. The father passed away in 1893.

Surviving Mr Berry are his widow, Mrs Minnie E. Berry, three sisters and several nephews and nieces, with numerous other relatives and friends.

He was married on June 11, 1898, to Minnie E. Marks at Manhattan, Kan., where both attended Kansas State Agricultural College. He was also a graduate of the Topeka business college.

Funeral service were held Wednesday, Sep 19, at 2:30 from the First Presbyterian church (sic) in Superior, conducted by Rev Carl O. Olson, after which the body was taken to Jewell City, Kan., and laid to rest besides his parents and sister.
