Gary J. Gochanour, 57, of Elyria, died Sunday, August 20, 2006, following complications from surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Born in Elyria, he was a lifelong resident. He was a 1967 graduate of Elyria High School. A U.S. Navy veteran for six years, he was stationed in Groton, Conn., and served on the nuclear submarine USS Billfish. He was a journeyman machinist with Amco Corp. in Elyria, with 12 years of service. He attended First Assembly Of God in Elyria, now Cross Community Church, and in recent years attended Elyria Community Church of the Nazarene. He was an active member in youth work, coaching basketball, baseball and gymnastics, and enjoyed fishing, golfing and family outings at Cedar Point.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Peggy A. Gochanour (nee Fahrney); daughters Kimberly L. Gochanour of Norwalk and Traci J. Barnovsky of Elyria; a son, Gary W. Gochanour of Fort Polk, Fla.; two grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Gochanour of Elyria; a brother, Richard Gochanour of Sheffield; and sisters Connie Parlett, Sandra Cave and Julie Parlett, all of Luray, Va.
He was preceded in death by his father, Reuben Gochanour in 1966, and a brother Douglas Gochanour.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elyria Community Church of the Nazarine, 1107 Clemens Ave., Elyria, where services will be 11 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. George A. Gribben III, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria, with military honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1079, Elyria. Busch Funeral Home, Elyria, is handling arrangements.
