A member of the firm of Thomas & Jameson, hardware merchants, of Palmyra, was born at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, September 20, 1839. His parents were Emanuel and Catherine (Remsburg) Thomas, natives of Frederick County, Maryland. The former was born August 17, 1806, and died in Palmyra, October 22, 1867; the latter was born March 20, 1810.

Mr. Thomas came West with his parents at the age of seven and located at Palmyra. Here he attended school and completed his education at St. Paul's College. When seventeen he began to learn the trade of machinist, working in the shops at Hannibal, and at Quincy, Illinois. He returned to Palmyra in March, 1864, and purchased a foundry and machine shop, which he conducted for two years. In 1867 he disposed of the shops and was elected city marshal, and collector and served in that capacity for two years. In 1869 he began the manufacture of agricultural implements and farm machinery, which he continued for eight years. He then engaged
in the sale of hardware and agricultural implements in partnership with Messrs. John A. Farmer and E. F. Jameson, under the firm name of Thomas, Farmer & Co., which continued until 1882, when he became associated with his present partner.
