Paul Edward Spence passed away Sept. 7, 2009, at the age of 79 in Portland. Paul attended school in Montana and joined the U.S. Army in 1948 at the age of 18. He served as a training sergeant during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1951.

Paul worked construction, building homes in the Portland Metro area. Later, he enrolled in auctioneer school in Billings, Mont. Paul was an auctioneer for 11 western states. He was later honored by serving two terms as president of the Oregon Auctioneer's Association during the 1980s.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise; daughter, Paulette Leonard and her fiancé, Richard Scesa; daughter, Patty Howe and fiancé, Bruce Sperry; son, Ronald Spence and his wife, Judy; brothers, Elvin Spence and his wife, Mary; and Eldon Spence and his wife, Debbie; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A visitation for Gresham resident Paul Edward Spence will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, in Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the Church of Christ, 9030 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, followed by burial in Willamette National Cemetery with full military honors. Remembrances may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America or the Church of Christ.
