At the time of Lou's birth, his birthplace of Lutsk was in Russia which is now Ukraine. In past centuries the town has also been part of Poland depending on the political factions.

Lou's mother Fanny arrived in the United States on August 14, 1921. Port of departure was Antwerp, Belgium. Vessel was the S.S. Lapland. The record of her arrival can be found on the Ellis Island website, Page 0146, Line 0010, Text Page 76. Fanny's husband Harry preceded her. Fanny (Feiga) arrived as Feiga Poticha, keeping with the official family name. Accompanying Fanny (age 41) were the three children Marion (age 9), Ben (age 18), and Lou (age 16). The family would later take Harry's adopted name of Schneider.

Lou had no formal education and was a grocer and butcher. He belonged to the St. Louis chapter of the Masons.
