Eugene Thomas McLaughlin Sr.

August 5, 1927 - September 11, 2009

Funeral services for Eugene T. McLaughlin Sr., 82 of Giddings, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2009 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings with Father Jim Olnhausen officiating. Burial will follow in the Ledbetter Cemetery in Ledbetter, Tx. Visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 7:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. A Rosary will be recited Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. McLaughlin passed away early Friday morning at Seton Medical Center in Austin following a battle with cancer.

Eugene Thomas McLaughlin Sr. was born on August 5, 1927 in Williamson County, Texas to Thomas Joseph & Mamie (Starnes) McLaughlin and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1946. He was a devout Catholic attending Catholic primary school in Taylor. He then graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Law Degree and was united in marriage to Jan McCray in Fort Bend County, Texas. Mr. McLaughlin was an attorney in Houston for 30 years before moving to Ledbetter where he practiced in the Lee County area. His professionalism was only overshadowed by his caring nature which was demonstrated through the numerous hours of pro-bono work that he provided to the poor and needy. He was an avid reader who loved fishing, camping, traveling and his grandchildren. Mr. McLaughlin had a great sense of humor, enjoyed country music and was an original cowboy at heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Brian McLaughlin; 2 sisters, Joan Lane and Frances McLaughlin and a nephew, Brian Lane.

Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Jan McLaughlin of Giddings; 5 children, Robert & Pam McLaughlin of Deer Park, James & Tina McLaughlin of Houston, Paul McLaughlin & Amie McLaughlin of Austin, Eugene McLaughlin Jr. of Brenham and Frances Doggett of Giddings;12 grandchildren, Robert McLaughlin Jr. and Sabrina McLaughlin both of Deer Park, Travis & Holly Robertson of Houston, Heather McLaughlin and Alyssa McLaughlin both of Sweetwater, Jennifer Croy of Austin, Savannah McLaughlin and Preston McLaughlin both of Austin, Jace McLaughlin & Joseph McLaughlin both of Brenham and Jacob Doggett & Jamie Doggett both of Giddings; brother, Donald McLaughlin Sr. of Uvalde; 2 sisters, Betty Mauer of Concan, Tx and Beverly & Roland Boedecker of Concan, Tx; niece, Connie Tidwell of Uvalde; 2 nephews, Don McLaughlin Jr. of Uvalde and Bart McLaughlin Sr. of Kerrville as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
