Asheville—Reverend Melvin Edward Brooks, age 84, of 65 Baker Place Ext., went to be with his Lord at Memorial Mission Hospital on Wednesday, October 19, 2005.

A native of Swaynee, NC, he was the son of the late Roy Lee and Susie Elizabeth Hall Brooks. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, David Brooks and a sister, Beulah Lewis. He was a graduate of Franklin High School. He was a US Army veteran of World War II having served in the 86th Mountain Infantry. He was a pastor for 50 years in Buncombe and Macon County and was a member of Freedom Baptist Church. He was employed by Dayco for more than 30 years in the Plastic Hose Department and enjoyed woodworking.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Freedom Baptist Church in Asheville with his son, Reverend Terry Brooks, Reverend Keith Hutchinson, and Reverend Mark Bishop. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2005 at Lake Junaluska First Baptist Church. Serving as pallbearers will be Ken Weatherman, Leonard Shuler, Dwayne Dyer, Matthew Roberts, Jack McIntosh, and Steve Arrowood.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Verna Beatrice Bryant Brooks; and his children, James and Judy Leeper of Asheville, Gary and Vanna Brooks of King, NC, Mike and Kathy Ledford of Barnardsville, NC, and Terry and Kim Brooks of Rutherfordton, NC; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
