He married 1. Caroline Shattuck on 7 April 1845 in Dubuque, Dubuque Co., Iowa

He married 2. Minerva Shattuck (Caroline's sister) on 9 May 1856 in Waukon, Allamakee Co., Iowa.

Prior to enlisting in Beetown, Wisconsin in 1861, he had lived in Waukon, Iowa and had studied to be a lawyer. He had also engaged in lead mining in Iowa and Wisconsin prior to the war.

He was killed in the very early morning at the beginning of the day's battle in the cornfield. He had been ill and left the field hospital when he heard the cannons, under protest from the staff, to join the conflict. He remarked to his Captain upon seeing him in the field, "Captain, I am with you to the last."
