"Dr. Hiram S. Crandall died at his home in this village Monday afternoon at the advanced age of nearly 80 years. For nearly a year he had been suffering from a disease of the stomach which gradually reduced his flesh and strength, yet until about four weeks ago he continued his practice, going as far as New Berlin. When no longer able to go out he would see and prescribe for patients at his home. From the first he correctly diagnosed his own case, and after it was well advanced told his friends the nature of his trouble, which he pronounced fatal. He explained how death would come and clung to his opinion to the last. Although medical assistance was called treatment proved of little avail and his predictions have been fully verified. Hiram Sanders Crandall was born in DeRuyter, Madison county, January 13, 1818, and was the youngest of a family of ten children. He was educated there in the district school and in DeRuyter Institute and then went to Hobart College at Geneva, which was then known as the Geneva Medical College ... In 1842 Dr. Crandall married Fannie A. Sisson of Plainfield, who died in January, 1889. In 1890 he married Oliva E. Copley, of Eaton, who is living. His children are: Stephen H., of Plainfield; Mary DeEtte, wife of Ellis J. Dunn, of New Market, N. J.; Lucius A., of Frankfort; Lucina Adele, widow of Silas K. Hawkins, of Burlington Flats, and Dr. Charles S. Crandall of Utica. The funeral services will be held from his late residence, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. A. Platts." ["Brookfield Courier" (Brookfield, NY), Wed., Dec. 1, 1897]
