On June 1, 1870, Chauncey Lewis, age 70; his wife Mary, age 58; and his unmarried daughter, Sarah J. Lewis, age 23, were living in Green Township, Marshall County, Indiana. By this time, Chauncey Lewis listed his occupation as a farmer. He gave Vermont as his birthplace, and Mary gave hers as New York. Sarah J. Lewis had been born in Marion County, Ohio.

Chauncey Lewis may have been born in 1799 or 1800 since he said that he was 70 years old on June 1, 1870. His parents were Ebenezer "Eben" Lewis and Lois Bearss, both of whom died in Claridon Township, Marion County, Ohio.
