ALICE DOROTHY DESMARAIS 1928_2007 In the early morning of May 29, 2007, Alice Dorothy Desmarais (Girly) peacefully passed from this world into the next when the good Lord called her home. Alice joins her beautiful mother, Mary Robillard, whom she thought of, longed for and missed every day since December 9, 1966. Alice also joins her grandmother Marie Nabis; her father August Robillard; brother Louis Robillard; her auntie Elizabeth Mary Rosebluff; her very special nieces Rhonda Robillard and Debbie Robillard; special nephews Ken Blondeau and Clarence Blondeau and her brother-in-law Edward Blondeau. Celebrating Alice's life is her husband, of 55 years, Alexander Joseph Desmarais who loved her without condition and will miss her every minute for the rest of his life. She had one daughter, Diedre Alexandria Desmarais and two grandchildren Bartholemew Alexander Michael Desmarais and Randi Lee Desmarais. Alice had one son, Jonas Rodney Desmarais. She also leaves to celebrate her life, brothers Alex (Elsie) Robillard, Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Oliver Johnson Robillard, Peachland, BC, Earl (Joan) Robillard, Regina and Leonard Robillard, Alberta; one sister Marlene Robillard (Dennis Driscoll), Regina; very special nieces Cheryl Ferguson, Alberta, Jeannie (Albert) Buckingham, Moose Jaw, Jackie (Leonard) Pederson, Carona, California, Nancy Bamford, Alberta, Lynn Robillard, Saskatoon and Denise Robillard, Peachland, BC; special nephews Darrell Robillard, BC, Michael Robillard, BC and Kevin Robillard, Regina. She has several other nieces and nephews residing in Saskatchewan and British Columbia and she will always be fondly remembered as `Auntie Girly'. Alice Desmarais, a Metis woman intensely proud of her heritage, was a life long advocate of Metis Rights. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Alice committed much time and effort to the grassroots formation of the Metis Society of Saskatchewan serving as Secretary in those early years when many meetings were held around the kitchen table. She went on to focus her attention and build a career committed to securing employment for aboriginal people. Alice began her long career with the government when she accepted employment as a Placement Officer with the Indian and Metis Employment Program, pioneered under the Ross Thatcher government. Alice completed her career as an Employment Equity Officer with Saskatchewan Public Service Commission, retiring in 1987. Countless numbers of aboriginal people in Saskatchewan were placed in secure and permanent positions within government as a result of Alice's devotion and commitment to enhancing the employment opportunities for aboriginal people in Saskatchewan. In her retirement years, Alice and Alex opened a small store at Grandview Beach, which they operated until 1997. They made many friends and the memories created were among their most cherished. It was also during those years that a special friendship and bond was formed with several families of the Hutterite Colony of Arm River and Alice experienced many moments of laughter and friendship with those special families. Tisha, Charlie, Cypress, Peek-a-Boo and Lizzie were Alice's treasured dogs that she loved throughout her lifetime. These special little friends captured a special place in Alice's heart. The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the care given to Alice by the nurses, aides and staff of the Sunset Extendicare Nursing Home. In the final days of Alice's life, the kindness, compassion and attention given to Alice will always be remembered and appreciated. A PRAYER SERVICE will be held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 100 Argyle Street, Regina, SK on Friday, June 1, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. INTERMENT to follow at Lumsden Cemetery.
