Fashion Designer. Elsa Schiaperelli developed many innovative wardrobe creations starting in the 1920s. Her collections included: hats, knitwear, sports apparel, dresses, coats, swimwear, shoes, evening gowns and jewelry. As one of the more innovative, diverse businesswomen of her era, she also developed several lines of perfume in collector bottles and made many costumes for the cinema. She used the daring choice of 'Shocking Pink,' as a standardized color for ordinary event apparel and this hue became widely accepted due to her work. She collaborated with several artists in designing her high fashion collections. Members of 'The Best Dressed List' had her designs in their closets - including the Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe and Eleanor Roosevelt. Schiaperelli refused to do designs during World War Two, as a personal statement regarding her political beliefs. Following the conclusion of the war, society's austere apparel choices caused her to loose money. Her fashion house was closed in 1954. Her society matron daughter, Gogo, had two daughters: the movie star and model, Marissa Berenson; and, the photographer and actress, Berry Berenson. Schiaperelli died in her sleep and was buried, in an Oriental style robe as a shroud - and it was made in 'shocking pink' fabric. Her grave is within a commune in Furcourt, France. (bio: A.
