Actually de Jesus is Maria's maiden name. Dos Santos is the man she was married to. In Portugal women retain their maiden name as their married name. She had the distinction for awhile of being the world's oldest living person.Full name Maria de Jesus dos Santos. Maria de Jesus dos Santos was a Portuguese supercentenarian who was the oldest verified living person for 37 days, until her death at 115 years and 114 days. She assumed this status after the November 26, 2008 death of American Edna Parker who was 115 years and 220 days.
She married Jose dos Santos in 1919 and became a widow in 1951 at the age of 57. As with tradition in Portugal she did not take her husband's last name. They had five children together. Three of whom were still living at the time of her death. One of those, a daughter, Madalena born Christmas Day, 1924 (25 December 1924), and lived with her mother. She also left 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. During her lifetime, she visited the hospital only once and was reportedly a healthy person. She remained fairly responsive until her last days, she was able to smile and waive to visitors. However, she could no longer recognize her family members, because of serious problems with her sight and hearing.
Maria de Jesus died as a result of septic shock. Her death left 114 year old Gertrude Baines as the oldest living person.
