Mary Elizabeth, or Maymie, was born in Winona, Mn. to Charles and Mary Brennan McGill. She married John Raphael O'Hern at St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral in Winona on June 9, 1891. The newlyweds returned to Dubuque, Iowa, John's home town. They raised 6 of their 9 children to adulthood, enduring the loss of their first three in the space of a year.

Maymie had seasonal allergies and suffered greatly each August and September. It did not improve her disposition. She was just 5 feet tall but she had a towering personality. And she adored her John.

She suffered a stroke in June of 1941 and did not linger long. Clearly John was waiting for her.
