DAN BUES DYER, SR.
MANASSAS, Va. - Brigadier General Dan Bues Dyer Sr., (USAF Retired), 83, of Manassas, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 2, 1913, in Elko, Nev., and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, he was the son of the late Herbert Allen and Ada Emma (Bues) Dyer. He also was preceded in death by two wives, Janet Lois (Maechtle) Dyer and Linda (Smith) Dyer; and one sister, Jane Reller Dyer.
General Dyer attended Northwestern University receiving a B.S. degree in 1935. He did post-graduate studies at the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, from 1936 to 1938, where he was accepted as a Ph.D. candidate. He also attended American University and the National War College. He was an Austin Scholar at Northwestern University. He was an active athlete and played football, basketball, soccer and track. He was an AAU Champion in the Rocky Mountain Conference in 1931.
In 1943, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and entered as a private. In 1950, he accepted a direct appointment as a colonel in the USAF Reserve. He was designated chief of the SAC/ADVEL group and maintained the group in a state of readiness from 1950 to 1961. His group was on 12-hour alert in the event of a crisis or war. He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1964.
He was a member of D.I.A. Rod and Gun Club, Targets Intelligence, and the Retired Officers Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Diana Jane Dyer, Manassas, and Deborah Ann Handy, Knoxville, Tenn.; three sons, Dan Bues Dyer, Jr., Grantsville, Md., formerly of Ashville and Black Mountain, N.C., David Allen Dyer, Chandler, Ariz., and Dennis Reed Dyer, Manassas, Va.; one brother, Joe Perry Dyer, Walnut, Calif.; dear friend, (G.A.) Lillian Orlich, Manassas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Blasius-Baker Funeral Home, 9320 West Street, Manassas, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Baker Chapel on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Pete Costello officiating.
Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with full military honors.
