Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Hubbard Saunders

Joseph enlisted as a Private in Company D (Orange Light Infantry), 1st Regiment North Carolina Infantry in Orange County at the age of 21 on April 6, 1861 for six months. He was present or accounted for until he was mustered out on November 12-13, 1861. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant of Company A, 33rd Regiment North Carolina Troops on December 14, 1861 and was promoted to Captain on April 25, 1862. He was wounded in the arm at Manassas, Virginia on August 29, 1862 “while preventing a brigade of the command to which he belonged from firing into their friends.” He returned to duty in November-December, 1862 and was appointed Major on May 13, 1863 and was transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. Joseph was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1863 and was hospitalized at Chester, Pennsylvania. He was transferred to Johnson’s Island Prison, Ohio on August 31, 1863 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel while a prisoner of war. He was paroled at Johnson’s Island on or about March 15, 1865, and was transferred to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland. He was received at Cox’s Wharf, James River, Virginia on March 22, 1865 for exchange. “A capital soldier and a true man . . .”
