Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Fowlkes of Gaffney, South Carolina, enlisted in the Marine Corps after his 2007 graduation. He served a previous tour of duty in Iraq and left for Afghanistan in June 2009, assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was severely injured by a roadside bomb in Helmand province on September 3, and was being treated at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. He died as a result of his wounds on September 10. He is survived by his parents; paternal grandparents; maternal grandmother; an uncle; an aunt; two step-brothers; and a step-sister. He was preceded in death by his mother and his maternal grandfather.
