Joseph R. Holbrook died suddenly a his home in Quincy township Thursday morning of last week. The malady was pronounced neuralgia of the heart. The deceased was for 53 years a resident of this county, having come here in the fall of 1852. He was well known and respected by all the old settlers and numbered his friends only by the extent of his acquaintance. Mr. Holbrook was born November 30, 1831, in the green mountain state. He was married in 1852 to Miss Mary Ann Miller and to them were born nine children the surviving ones being Mrs. Lettie George, of Prescott; John, of Lawrence Nebraska; Mrs. Eliza Dewees, Colona, Iowa; Mrs. Joseph Prather, at home, Joseph, of Washington township, Hector, of West Point, Nebraska, Grant, of Quincy, and Alfred, of Quincy township. One daughter, Mrs Maggie Mendenhall, died about two years ago. The funeral services were held Sunday from the residence, Rev. Mr. Mack officiating, and interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery. Mr. Holbrook was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Holbrook, of Cheshire county, New Hampshire. He was years old when the family moved to Perry county, Ohio. In 1851 the moved to Lucas county, Iowa, where in1852 he was married to Miss Mary Ann Miller, as indicated above. Mr. Holbrook was very prominent in affairs of this county In the early days, being for eight years a justice of the peace. He was also the first prosecuting attorney and served as county supervisor for one year. He erected the first house in Quincy, then the county seat of Adam County. for one year he conducted a mercantile establishment in that place, after which he purchased land and has been one of the most successful farmers in this section, having resided on the place now occupied by the family for over 31 years.
