Richard was educated at Moses Brown School, Dartmouth College, B.A. 1937, Editor, The Jack-O-Lantern. Columbia University, Massachusetts 1939, PhD. 1943. Career: Teacher and Professor of English, Connecticut College and Columbia University. Visiting Professor, Indiana University. Author of several books and many articles on American literature and literary criticism. Among his books were: Herman Melville, A Critical Study, 1949; Emily Dickinson, 1951; The American Novel and Its Tradition, 1957; and The Democratic Vista, 1958.

Former Resident's Son to Graduate from Dartmouth.

Richard Volney Chase Jr., of Worcester, Mass. is a member of the 1937 class to graduate at Dartmouth College today. Richard is a son of Richard Volney Chase, Sr., and grandson of the late Irving H. Chase both former residents of Lakeport.

Irving H. Chase, 2nd, the youngest son and grandson, a sophomore at Harvard and a member of the Naval Science Class in that university, will take the Government summer training cruise to the Hawaiian Islands aboard the Battleship Colorado from San Francisco June 19. Irving represents an exchange with a member of the Naval Science class of the University of California who will come east for the summer training cruise in Atlantic waters.

Richard married in Kennebunkport, Maine July 1, 1940, Frances Marie Walker. He drowned while swimming.

Cemetery Records of Blair Cemetery tell us that Richard is buried in this cemetery. He has no footstone.

There are four children:
•Elizabeth Marie who was born October 20, 1944.
•Richard Alexander who was born September 26, 1946.
•Elliott who was born February 22, 1950.
•Nathaniel Cheney who was born July 7, 1953.
