McLaughlin--Mary M., age 69, 701 Laurel Ave., passed away Sunday. Survived by two sons, John and Andrew A., a sister and two brothers. Funeral services Tuesday morning at 8:30 from the residence; at 9 o'clock. Basilica of St. Mary. Interment St. Mary's cemetery.

Death of Mrs. McLaughlin (from the Basilica of St. Mary's in Minneapolis)
Mrs. Mary McLaughlin, matron in charge of the school cafeteria for twenty years, died suddenly on Sunday, October 27, 1935. Mrs. Mac, as she was familiarly known to many generations of the parish school children, was a native of Galena, Illinois, a convert to the faith at the time of her marriage at the age of eighteen, and a widow with two sons four years later. She was a member of the Basilica parish for over a quarter of a century. During her years in the cafeteria she was absent from her post of duty only one day, the Wednesday of her last week on earth. The Solemn High Mass of Requiem was celebrated by Father Reardon assisted by the priests of the parish in presence of the Most Revered Bishop Liston of Auckland, New Zealand, the pupils of the school and a large congregation of the parishioners. After the absolution the coffin was borne to the hearse through a guard of honor composed of the school children massed on the front steps of the church. The remains were interred in St. Mary's cemetery.
NOTE: Lena was "farmed out" to the Huber family as a cook when but a child and learned to become a world-class cook, according to her granddaughter.

At the end of the first World War the people of the parish gave of their gold ornaments and precious stones to be incorporated into the "Liberty Chalice" as a Thanksgiving offering. On December 21, 1932, it was enriched by the addition of two diamonds from earrings donated by Mrs. Mary McLaughlin, matron of the cafeteria for many years.

Oral history from Lena's living granddaughter: After Lena's mother (Sophia) died, her father (Christian) wanted to marry another woman who didn't want all of the children around so he "farmed out" the children to other families and Lena took on the new family's name. Lena became a servant in the Michael Huber home as a cook and became a world class chef while at their home but it was servitude and the children were resentful of it.
Christian and his new wife went on to have 6 more children.
