Following the death of her husband, Samuel Bascom in Warren, Worcester, Massachusetts on 11 September 1779; the Widow Mary Bascom and Joseph Root, Esq. of Montague, Franklin, Massachusetts married [intentions of marriage published 1 October 1782 in Warren; 6 October 1782 in Montague]. Joseph Root, Esq. died in Montague, Franklin, Massachusetts died1 October 1786.

Mrs. Mary (Bascom) Root died in Chester, Hampden, Massachusetts 6 May 1813 in her 89th year. She is buried in Chester Center Cemetery with her son Rev. Aaron Bascom, his 1st wife, Theodosia Ashley Bascom, and several of their children.
