George Clay Davis, son of Josiah and Hannah Gibbon Davis, was bom February 11, 1875, at Maynard, Iowa. He departed this life at Charles City, Iowa, in the home of his son Paul, on March 14, 1946 at the age of 71 years, one month and three days. He had been in failing health for the past year and a half, but put up a gallant fight for life until the last, when he very quietly slipped away at four in the morning. He was united in marriage to Fern Knight, July 6, 1910, at Maynard. To this union seven children were born:Mrs. (lola) Ralph Bright, Eldora, Iowa: Gerald, Hubbard, IA. Paul, Charles City, IA. Aulden and Reynold, Wauconda, IL. Claude, Radcliffe, IA. Mrs. (Pearl) Bob Nitz, Elgin, IL. There are also sixteen grand children. He was one often children foui of which are still living. They are Robert of Fayette, Dudley and Mrs. George (Judith) Paul of Oelwein and Mrs. Dell Mittelstadt of West Union. Mr. Davis spent most of his life farming in Fayette county until failing health caused him to retire. The great number of friends which he had in the different communities in which he lived bespeak of the kind of neighbor he was. Scores of cards and letters came to him and his companion during his illness and many friends drove long distances to visit them. The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mesdames Edwin Benz and Taylor Brigg Mesdames Laura Arthur and Donna Reed sang, "The Old Rugged Cross", "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and "Going Down the Valley" with Mrs. Walter Jellings at the piano. The casket bearers were: Harry McLaury, Harold Strong, Edwin Benz, Taylor Briggs, John 0"Dell and Earl Beman. Internment was in Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard.
