John Henry Wilson was an attorney and a farmer who hailed from tidewater Virginia. In the 1860 census he is listed in Essex County with his wife Adeliza "Addie" (Derieux) Wilson, their children (James) Edwin (6), Henry P. (3) and Catherine E. (2), and Addie's siblings Peter Derieux (24), Susan C. Derieux (17), and Emma S. Derieux (15). Adeliza was the daughter of Peter and Catherine Anne (Croxton) Derieux of Essex County.

On 10 June 1861, John Henry Wilson enlisted as a Sergeant in Company F, Virginia 9th Cavalry (Johnson's Regiment). He was promoted to Full Lieutenant on 30 Apr 1862. During the Civil War he served part of the time as a supply officer, and also was detailed as a Judge Advocate. A muster roll for his company prepared at the end of the conflict shows him as Fourth Captain.

The Wilson family is found in the 1870 census of Essex County, Virginia, living in the community of Miller's Tavern.

In 1880 the Wilsons were still in Essex County, and the census shows baby daughter Maud was born about 1875. The family had arrived in Missouri sometime before 1890. (The 1890 Veterans Schedule shows John H. Wilson, Confederate Veteran, living in Jasper County). According his grandson, Harry Robert Wilson, John Henry Wilson was a schoolteacher and Justice of the Peace in Carthage, Missouri.
