Goerge Skakel was the founder
of the highly successful
Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.
He operated it in a manner
where it made him one of the
wealthiest men in the
United States.

As a self-made millionare,
he started as a railway clerk
who did not forget his humble
beginnings.
Skakel could often be seen
roaming his 16 acre Greenwich
estate grounds wearing old,
worn apparel. He was mistaken,
on more than one occasion,
for the hired-gardner!
(He found this very amusing!)

Multi-millionaire George
and his wife Ann, were killed
when their refurbished WWII
B-29 bomber airplane crashed
near Union City, Oklahoma.
Witnesses reported seeing
the plane flying low with
both engines ablaze shortly
before the crash.

The airplane's crew died
in the accident as well.
