Philip was the eldest son of John Taylor and Margaret Shaffer.

He first married Mary Weygandt, daughter of William and Margaret Weygandt, on Mar. 5, 1833 in Stark County, Ohio. They became the parents of William, Clarissa, John Shaffer, Henry Hamilton and Margaret. Philip's wife, Mary, died on Jan. 11, 1849 in Stark County, Ohio.

Philip then married his 2nd cousin, Joanna McGrew, daughter of Peter McGrew and Mary Miller. (Their mothers were first cousins) Philip and Joanna became the parents of Mary Jane, Florentia Thermutis, Julianne Frances, Philip Edward, Martial Howard, Findley Irving, Elmore E., Ida May and Carson P. Only Mary Jane, Julianne Frances and Findley Irving survived to adulthood.

In the spring of 1856, Philip and his family traveled by wagon train from Ohio to Cedar County, Iowa where they settled near Coon Creek. Traveling in the wagon train were the Samuel and Elizabeth Flaugher family from Tiffin, Ohio. Their son, William Flaugher, married Mary Jane Taylor 19 years later in Mechanicsville.

Philip Taylor died on Nov. 2, 1865. His son, Carson, was born 5 months after his death.
