Andrew J. Thorn (B. 1846) was captured by the yankees while AWOL from the Confederate Army at home in Gordon County. Due to his young age, he was taken to Louisville, Kentucky and released north of the Ohio River with the promise not to return south until after the war. He joined the US (Union) Army because he could find no other work and was on his way back south with his unit from Indiana when the war ended. His wife Martha drew his civil war pension until her death in 1931. She would go to the post office faithfully once a month to collect the $8.75 check!
