Johnny Schmidt, 61, died suddenley near Tea, SD on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, the result of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were held at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls on Sept. 5. Rev. Les Svendtsen and speaker Lynn DeYoung officiated. Organist was Marilyn Schempp and
Tom King played bagpipes.

Honorary pallbearers were the Tea Fire Department and all South Dakota Fire Fighters.

Casketbearers were Kevin Schmidt, Kerry Schmidt, Mike Schmidt, Jerry Lemme, Donnis Wipf, Michael Thode, Jason Thode, Mark Thode, Mathew Thode.

Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Tea.

Johnny Lee Schmidt was born on Dec. 1, 1947 at Freeman, SD, the son of Elias and Irene (Wipf) Schmidt. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1965.

Johnny was united in marriage to Pam Parrish in 1968. From the union he had two sons, Jonathan and Jeremy.

He began working at John Morrell & Co. from 1965 until January of 2000, when he was diagnosed with cancer and had to retire. He worked at Lakota Tupperware Warehouse and helped at Lee's Meat's during hunting season.

On May 19, 1979 he was united in marriage to Pam Thode. They had a son, Brian, and continued to make their home in Tea.

Johnny was a member of the Tea Fire Department for the past 35 years, serving as Fire Chief for several years and was presently serving as President.He was an avid firefighter, collected fire department items, enjoyed going to auctions and hunting.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 30 years, Pam; three sons: Jonathan Schmidt of Bellevue, NE, and grandsons: Tylor and Dane; Jeremy Schmidt and his wife, Heather of Sioux Falls and granddaughter, Tayah and grandchild due January of 2010; and Brian Schmidt of Tea;
two brothers: Eli Schmidt, Jr. and his wife, LaVonne, and Larry Schmidt and his wife, Dianne, all of Sioux
Falls; plus other relatives and a host of friends.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers: LaVern Wipf and Gene Schmidt and daughter-in-law: Pam (Nelson) Schmidt.
