Manasseh S. Knox, Jr., son of Robert F. J. and Ruth Gwinn Knox, was born at Alexandria, Nebraska, January 31, 1893. He was the third child of a family which consisted of one daughter and three sons. The infant son and mother died in 1895 and the death of the father occurred in 1902. When Nattie, as he was called by everyone, was about two years of age, his mother having died, he went to live with his Uncle M. S. Knox and Aunt Lovina who lavished upon him all the love and affection possible for an uncle and aunt to bestow. Seemingly he was as dear to them as an own son could have been. When a young boy he united with the Havensville M. E. Church during the pastorate of Rev. J. H. Kuhn. On December 23, 1916 he was united in marriage with Miss Fern Higgins and moved to the Knox farm north of Havensville where they have lived since. This couple who never forgot the previous kindness of the uncle, M. S. Knox, gladly welcomed his visits in their home, his advice and suggestions in business affairs and his untiring interest in their success. This mutual love and association ended only with the death of the uncle last October. Nattie's health having failed he entered a sanitarium in Topeka for treatment in January of the present year. For a time he improved then gradually grew worse, passing away July 17, 1930, at the age of thirty seven years, five months and sixteen days.
Besides his wife he leaves one sister, Mrs. Flossie Kelty of Long Beach, California; one brother, R. F. J. Knox of Westmoreland, Kansas; two half brothers, Clarence Ross of Shelley, Idaho; and Frank Ross of Havensville; and an aunt Mrs. Rose Budd of Havensville. He also leaves the aunt who was a mother to him, Mrs. Lovina Knox of this city. Having spent practically all his life in the community he made many friends who will miss his neighborliness, friendliness and his ready smile. The funeral service conducted by Rev. C. W. Hildebrand, assisted by Rev. J. C. Paschal was held in the M. E. church, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and burial made in the city cemetery.
