Willis Burten Harper was born the son of James and Mary Greene Harper. He married Eleanor Williams on 16 November 1845, in Harrison county, Missouri. They had a son, Thomas McGinnis Harper, and a daughter, Mahala Ann Harper. Willis and Eleanor were divorced in March 1854, and she married married James McReynolds in Macoupin county, Illinois. Willis took his two children with him when he married Nancy Miranda Bridges Hammer on 23 April 1854 in Blythedale, Harrison, Missouri. The children of Nancy and Willis were: Isaac Willis "Ike" Harper (1855–1915), George William Harper (1856–1925), John Brown Allen Harper (1859–1942), James Franklin Harper (1861–1884), Luella Beatrice Harper (1862–1948), David Edgar Harper (1865–1939), Samuel Moore Harper (1868–1949), Desdemonia* Jane "Dessie" Harper (1870–1929), Charles Albert Harper (1872–1912), and Pheba "Minnie" Maud Harper (1876–1944).
