Delmar is the grandson of Samuel and Julia Mallory Mays and the son of Dock and Lulu Anderson Mays. Delmer did general labor in the Charleston area for the early part of his adulthood. Around January 18th 1930, he married Virgie (King) Branham. Virgie was a widow and had 4 children ages 2-8 yrs from her first marriage. She was 23 years old at the time of her marriage to Delmer.
About one month into his new marriage, he came down with an infection (pneumonia) and within a brief few days he developed myocarditis. Delmar died at his home on Villa Route, Box 17, Charleston, WV at 23 years, 7 months and 18 days.
