Sergeant-Major, 101 Engineer Battalion
(101 Geniebataljon), Royal Dutch Army based at the Princess Margriet barracks in Wezep.

He was deployed with the approximately 1,770 troops from the Netherlands serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Sgt-Maj Leijsen, aged 44, was killed by an improvised explosive device near outpost Tabar in Uruzgan province. Three other soldiers and an Afghan translator were wounded when their vehicle struck the roadside bomb about 9 kilometres northwest of the main Dutch base, Camp Holland.

He was part of an Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT), which supports the Afghan army in operations and training. He was serving on his third mission in Uruzgan. Described as enthusiastic in all his pursuits, he was remembered for his passion for motorcycles and raising koi carp.

Sgt-Maj Leijsen is survived by his wife Lucienne, their teenaged son, other relatives, friends and colleagues.

Repatriation ceremony was held at Eindhoven Airbase, Netherlands on September 9, 2009. Funeral with military honours held on September 14, 2009.
