Abbie was the sixth of eight children born to Ephraim Leighton Jr and Hannah Brainard. She and her siblings were born in Parkman but grew up in Augusta. They are: Laura Ann; Henry Martin; twins Rosanna Brainard and Rosilla Clough; Owen Oaks; Esther C.; and Sullivan Augustus.
She married late in life and lived at home with her parents until she that marriage at age 54. Her parents died in 1876 and 1870 respectively.
On May 15, 1885, Abbie married widower William E. Lowell, son of William and Jemima (Maxim) Lowell in Augusta. He was married twice previously, once to Mary H. Cogswell who died in 1881.
Abbie became step-mother to William's 16-year-old daughter, Mary, who was still living at home when they married.
Abbie died of tuberculosis in 1893 and she is buried in the Lowell family plot with William, who died in 1901.
