Jack Henry Dempsey, 84, a resident of Peshastin for the past 71 years, died Monday afternoon, Dec. 14, 1992, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born on March 21, 1908, in Bridgeport, Wash., to Charles and Helen (Thomas) Dempsey. The family moved to Wenatchee in 1920. A year later, they came to Peshastin, where he grew up and attended school.
Following the death of his father, he left school and worked for the Peshastin Lumber and Box Co. He later worked for the Great Northern Railway. After a few years there, he returned to the Peshastin mill, where he worked until his retirement in 1972.
Mr. Dempsey married Gladys Haugen on Feb. 1, 1947, in Ritzville. They lived in Peshastin.
He was a member of the Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union, Local No. 2841, and attended the Peshastin United Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, at home; a daughter, Carol Avey, of Marysville; two sons, Jack H. Dempsey Jr. of Auburn and Danny Dempsey of Monroe and a brother, Larry Dempsey, of Leavenworth. Also four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a sister and four brothers.
A private family service took place Dec. 15 in the Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth. The Rev. Richard Bushman officiated.
Memorials in Mr. Dempsey's name can be made to the Peshastin United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.
Ward's Funeral Chapel had charge of the arrangements.
