He entered service as a drafted militia man in the beginning of April 1776 in the company commanded by Captain Daniel Burkhart, Lieutenant Godfrey Kesler, and Ensign John Westenberger in Kingsessing (not led gable) They marched to Philadelphia ----- and ---the barracks and remained in Philadelphia and were occupied as guards during there term of service which was not less than two months when they were discharged. He again entered the service as a volunteer in the militia in Philadelphia in the beginning of July 1776 in a company commanded by Capt. Campbell the names of the other officers not recollected, they were connected to the regiment commanded by Col. Thomas McKean and Major Dion. The company to which he belonged were stationed as guards in the city of Philadelphia, to guard British prisoners, the magazine and the capitol then building, soldiers being scarce at that time. He being willing to render his country what service he could. He remained in the service, serving under various officers until the beginning of April 1777, when he was discharged after having been in the service not less than nine months. And making the two campaigns not less than eleven months. This and more signed my by his mark, John F. Gaul. Also affidavits to his credibility signed by Henry Leech and George Westenberger, (his neighbors and in-laws).
