Mrs. Evelyn Hammons Grant, 77, a retired stenographer and clerk, died Sunday,
Jan. 30, 2000, of heart failure at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Services were held Tuesday from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in
Ridgeland with the Rev. J.R. Hall and Sam Burton officiating and interment in
Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
A Copiah County native, Mrs. Grant moved to Illinois in 1945 and lived in the
Chicago suburb of Homewood for 40 years. She returned to Mississippi in 1990.
She was an AARP voluntary income tax counselor since 1980. She was a member of
the National Honor Society. She was active in the
Homewood Reformed Church Women's Organization for many years. She was a member
of First United Methodist Church in Ridgeland and active in the Sunday School
and Women's Circle of the church. She retired from the Illinois Central Railroad
as a stenographer and clerk after 38 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Kenneth Grant.
Survivors include her sister, Louise Hammons King of Baton Rouge, La.; brothers,
Vernon L. Hammons of Ridgeland, Lt. E.W. Hammons, Ret., of Pollock, La., Troy E.
Hammons of Marshall, Texas, Dr. Ray O. Hammons of Trifton, Ga., and Roy N.
Hammons of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in Ridgeland.
