Vernon Leon Hughes, 76, of Coverstone Lane in Shenandoah, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, December 26, 2000.
He was born in Page County on April 28, 1924, and was the son of the late Hunter and Cora Eppard Hughes.
He was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church.He was a World War II Army Veteran and received The Purple Heart.He was a member of the Avis O.Comer VFW Post No.8613 in Shenandoah.Before retiring he was employed at Merck & Co.
On October 15, 1947, he married the former Velva Meadows who survies.
Mr. Hughes is also survived by three daughters,Linda Sue Hamilton of Stuarts Draft;Bonnie Lou Hilliards of Luray;Lori Ann Berrier and husband Kenneth Berrier of Mt.Airy,NC;three grandchildren,Donnie Leon Hughes and wife Patrice Hughes,George Vernon Hamilton,and Wendy Sue Hilliards;a great-grandson, Tylor Williams.
He was preceded in death by a son,Donnie Leon Hughes.
Also preceded in death two brothers;John Hughes and William Hughes and one sister;Virginia "Sis" Plum.
The family received friends at the Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah Thursday Evening, December 28, at 7-8:00PM.
A Funeral service was held At Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah on Friday, December 29, with Revs. Hudson Nuckols and Johnny Hensley.
