Elsie May Evans Tade was born to Daniel Morier and Mary Ann (Trent) Evans. Her mother died in England in 1874 after catching cold while coming home from a party. She is buried somewhere in England. Elsie immigrated to the U.S. with her father, stepmother and younger brother in 1875. Her father placed Elsie and her brother in an orphanage. Date and location of his death is unknown. She was adopted by the Rev. Ewing Ogden Tade and his wife Amanda Louisa (Duncan) Tade in 1877 from the Ladies Protection and Relief Society Orphanage in San Francisco, CA.
Her stepmother, Hannah Eliza (Bishop) Evans returned to England. Elsie's brother, Ralph Harold Morier Evans was adopted by Calvin and Maria Dickey. He died in 1930 and is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bisbee, Cochise, Arizona.
Elsie married attorney Henry Hawson at her adoptive parents' home on August 10, 1904 in Berkeley, California. Her adoptive father E.O. Tade performed the ceremony.
