Thaddeus Colfax Greene is the son of Eady Dodge Greene, who was born in Maine and pioneered with her family to Oxford Butler Ohio, and Thomas Bowen Greene of Williamston Berkshire Massachusetts, who pioneered as well, moving to Butler County Ohio after completing a tour of duty in the US Army in Northern Ohio. Thomas and Eady married in 1818, and soon moved their growing family to Huntsville Alabama where their sons Daniel, Thomas, Charles and Thaddeus were born, Thad on 05 Jun 1835. The older children, Clarissa, James and Amaziah were born in Butler County Ohio.
The family returned to the area after the death of their father in Alabama. Thaddeus, Daniel, Thomas and Charles opened a carriage-making shop in Abington, called Thomas B Greene & Sons, that was successful for several years. All enlisted during the Civil War and Thaddeus originally enlisted in the 8th Infantry, but soon joined Daniel in the 19th Indiana Volunteer Battery, also known as Harris' Battery. Though taken prisoner and released, Thaddeus remained healthy and unscathed during the remainder of the war. After the war, and engaged to Martha Ella Coddington, Thad was taking part in the 4th of July celebration when a canon misfired and blew off both his hands. The engagement continued and their subsequent marriage in Richmond Wayne Indiana on 30 May 1867, yielded a daughter, Dotha Leona. Thaddeus was appointed Postmaster of Centerville Indiana, a position he held until his death on 08 Mar 1880.
