Mrs. Mary Susan Brasher, wife of Judge Jos. M. Brasher of this city died at the family home at 511 West Eight street yesterday, June 22, following an illness of some duration, largely incident to the natural failing of old age. She was somewhat past 81 years old and had suffered for many years from neuritis, which finally affected the heart.
Mrs. Brasher was born April 14, 1850, at Huffman, Ark., the daughter of the late Judge Jesse and Mary Branch Huffman. She spent the early part of her life principally at Cottonwood Point, Mo., and was united in marriage there to Joseph L. Pate on Nov. 4, 1869. Three sons were born of this marriage--D. LaFayette, William Jesse and Stephen Steele Pate , the last two of whom yet survive.
Her first husband died many years ago and in 1875 she was married to Joseph M. Brasher, who then was a farmer in the town of Cottonwood. Five children were born to this union: Mrs. Mattie E. Gowen, Mrs. Mary Curtis, Herman Malcolm Brasher, Joseph David Brasher and Mrs. Hattie Smith.
The family moved to Caruthersville about the year 1900 for the sake of better educational facilities for their two youngest children, Joe and Hattie, and they have made this city their home since then.
Mrs. Brasher was a kind-hearted, unselfish, Christian woman and from early girlhood was a member of the Methodist church at Cottonwood where her membership remained up until the time of her death. She was a mother to a number of orphan children, bringing them into her home and rearing them as her own, among these being her brother's children, Carl and Jessie Huffman, the latter now being Mrs. R.F. Coppage, Carl having died several years ago.
She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Mattie E. Gowen, two sons, W.J. and S.S. Pate, one own brother, David Huffman, present mayor of the city, a half-brother, Edwin S. Huffman and a half-sister Mrs. Anna Michell, besides a number of nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Funeral services are to be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock at the family home on West Eighth, conducted by the Rev. Carlton R. Wade, and interment will be in the family plot in Little Prairie cemetery.
