North St. Paul police officer Richard Crittenden, 57, a nine-year veteran of the department was killed while on a call checking on a violation of an order for protection.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, a woman at the apartment complex called police to report a violation of an order of protection. The officers entered apartment number 101, on the first floor of the brick apartment building. Crittenden reportedly pushed the woman out of harm's way but in the process left himself vulnerable for the man to ambush him, grab his handgun and shoot him in the head, the source said. As they tried to protect the woman from the man, shots rang out. During the struggle, two officers and the suspect were shot.The suspect was killed. The second officer of the Maplewood police department was shot
in the arm, and was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She was treated and released.
North St. Paul, a suburb of about 11,000 residents, has 18 sworn officers. Maplewood, with about 36,000 residents, has 55 sworn officers.
Crittenden's wife, Christine, is a former North St. Paul reserve officer.
He served 4 years in the U.S. Army including a tour of duty in Vietnam and is a former deputy in Wabasha County.
