Mr. David E. Young, 75, died peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2009, at his Indianapolis, Indiana residence. While he was baptized as the historic Gorham M. E. Church at a very early age, David placed his trust in the Lord Jesus Christ in 1981. He served the Lord at University United Methodist Church, and was active in the church's United Methodist Men. A graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, he attended Butler, Indiana, and Kentucky State Universities. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army's 3rd Armored Division, where he played in the band. A humble yet renowned musician, he proficiently played several instruments including the tenor saxophone, alto and soprano saxophones, clarinet, flute, and the piccolo. David played professionally with George Russell, Lionel Hampton, Jack McDuff, Mercer Ellington. Willis Kirk, Jimmy Coe, Jimmie McDaniel, Pookie Johnson, George Bright, and Melvin Rhyne. Many of those professional relationships were also lifelong friendships. He received numerous awards and accolades, including the key to the City of Indianapolis, and he was featured among the Indiana Avenue musicians depicted in the mural at the Watkins Park Family Life Center. He toured the United States, Europe, and Asia from 1965-1985 as a road musician, and resided in both New York and New Jersey prior to returning to his native Indianapolis. He was a member of the National Federation of Musicians and the American Federation of Musicians, Indianapolis Local #3. On Friday, February 13 2009, services will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the University United Methodist Church, 5959 Grandview Drive, with calling from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the church, with entombment at New Crown Cemetery and Mausoleum, 2101 Churchman Avenue, Indianapolis. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to youth musical education, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Musical Ministries at the University United Methodist Church, 5959 Grandview Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228. He is survived by a son, David A. Young; daughters Nina D. Bennett (Wadell) and Karen M. Taylor; grandchildren LaTorey Malone, Kara Taylor, and Kyle David Young; former wife Violet Young; many dear friends including Edythe Fitzhugh, Rev. Nathaniel Hankerson, Connie McKenzie, Curtis McElwain, Melvin Rhyne, George Bright, and Valerie Johnson; devoted pastor and friend, Dr. Frank N. Moore; cousin Donna Kay Jackson; and many more extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Flora Young; former wife Jane Johnson; and grandson Evan Chase Wilder. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Stuart Mortuary , Inc.
