Following the Civil War, Hugh returned to Illinois and married Bridget Cochran. They had two daughters, Mary and Agnes. Hugh had health problems and his doctor advised him to move to a better climate. Bridget died either during their move or shortly on arrival to Leavenworth! Kansas. Hugh met and married Hellen Fisher, the daughter of Prussian immigrants, Marie and Albert Fisher. After their marriage, Hugh and Hellen moved to southeast Kansas, eventually settling in the Scammon and Weir areas in Cherokee County.
