(Mary Ann Markham, wife of Abner C. Hansard, dau. of Peter Markham & Priscilla Hill, author of "Old Time Tazewell")
Title: Old Time Tazewell
Author: Hansard, Mary A.
Publication: Kingsport, Tennessee: Kingsport Press, Inc., 1979
Note: Written in the 1890s, this book contains sketches of a number of families based on the memories of the author. Her memory is usually quite good. The book is widely available in a number of libraries and for purchase. The dates of the various articles appear to vary, but since the author died in 1899, 1899 can easily be used as a date before which someone died if listed in the book as having died. RAW has a copy.

Mary Hansard was born in Tazewell in 1825 and lived within a few miles of her birthplace until her death in 1899.

Information from Phillip Walker:

Written by M.A. Hansard in
Old Time Tazewell, p. 58:

Jeff D. Hansard, sixth son, was a very kind, obliging and affectionate son, but very easily excited. His wife was Mollie Butcher, a daughter of Rev. David Butcher, who is a fine man and much respected. But this daughter acted badly, which grieved her parents greatly, and caused her kind husband to commit suicide by drowning himself in the Clinch River near Walker's Ford, when in a frenzied state of mind. I am told that she has acted badly since his death. They had 3 children, two sons and a daughter. They are very industrious children. The oldest son, a lad of eleven years, makes a support for the family.

The author of Old Time Tazewell was Jeff's mother and was probably quite biased in her interpretation of events. Based on the clue that the oldest son was 11, this article was written about 1895, about a year or so since Jeff's death. Considering the fact that the article also mentions the death of Jeff's father, which occured in 1895, the timing on the article is further confirmed; Mary Ann Hansard, the author, died in 1899.

Having not researched the Hansards or this incident in any depth, I cannot speak with authority but simply present facts as known. According to Pat Walker, a grandson, the final son was born postumously "some few months" after Jeff killed himself. Mary Ann Hansard, in Old Time Tazewell, specifically lists two sons; the postumous son would be the third living boy and was born before the article appears to have been written. One might assume that the author of Old Time Tazewell felt that this third child did not belong to Jeff. An apparently recent tombstone shows Jeff having died sometime in 1894. Pat's dates were often wrong, but the third son was born in January 1894, so for Pat's story to be correct, Jeff died in 1893.

Further, modern sources appear to refer to Jeff as Thomas Jefferson Hansard or sometimes Thomas Jefferson Davis Hansard; his mother just called him Jeff D. Having not researched this family in depth, I cannot state with certainty, but the "Thomas" part seems to be a modern addition. As he was born early in the Civil War to a family with Confederate sympathies, "Jeff D." does sound very much as if it were "Jefferson Davis".

Burial information: According to TVA records, Jeff, Mollie, and Magnolia were all originally buried at Butcher Cemetery. Based on arbitrary TVA plot numbers which often indicate proximity but not well, Jeff and Magnolia were buried near each other with Mollie elsewhere; TVA records at the National Archives in Atlanta will have all the paperwork on the grave removals that would say more. They were all three moved to the same plot at Big Barren Memorial Cemetery; there are headstones but apparently with no dates. Sampson Boruff, her second husband, also is buried at Big Barren but was moved from the old Big Barren in Claiborne County and is buried in another area.
