Carlo Giovanni Batista Marochetti was born in Turin in 1805. The family of Marochetti moved to France and he became a French citizen and began to study sculpture under François-Joseph Bosio. In 1848 Marochetti fled to London and became famous for his equestrian statues. His best known work is his equestrian statue of Richard I, King of England, also known as Richard The Lionheart. The statue was first shown at the great Exibition of 1851. The statue is cast in bronze and is placed in a focal point of English history (Westminster Palace Yard, between the Abbey and the houses of Parliament). The costs for the statue were met by a public subscription, to which Queen Victoria contributed £ 200. Carlo Marochetti is buried in Vaux sur Seine in a quite modest tomb of his own design.
