Immediately on coming to Decatur in 1885, he engaged in the retail grocery business on Eldorado street until 1915 when he erected a two-story building at Orchard and Morgan street. He was in that business for over 25 years when he retired.
He was born Feb. 17, 1856, in Quincy, the son of Sebastian and Johanna Bachmann. He studied in the public schools of Quincy until he had to quit and find employment for his father had become an invalid. He was successful and gave assistance to his parents. Until his marriage he had been associated with the firm of Halbach-Schroeder Co. He resigned there and came to Decatur.
He was a charter member of St. Johannes Lutheran church and was treasurer for more than 20 years, served as a member of the board of trustees,and was an elder. Prior to this he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church. His interests in the activities never lagged.
He married Miss Minnie Boetticher, a daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Boetticher. They were married in Mt. Pulaski Aug.26,1879 and they observed their fiftieth anniversary. Lots of friends came to the anniversary party.
He leaves his wife, and children, Dr. Albert J. Bachmann, Mrs.E.L. Heyne of Chicago, Mrs.A.J. Holtman of Ft. Wayne, Ind, Dr. Arthur S. and Fred Bachmann of Decatur, sister Mrs. William Hoener of Quincy, eight grandchildren.
