My Great-Grandfather Albrecht came from a Jewish family of 12. Albrecht was born in Braunau, Czech Republic, the son of Rudolf Lowit and Katarina Pick Lowit. The family was very rich and run a factory in Prague, Czech Republic that employed weavers and chemists. It was said that Albrecht was educated by nuns in a convent. He immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1881. He landed at Castle Gardens in New York City, NY (this was before Ellis Island was built.). He later met his wife, Anna Kafka through mutual friends sometime after 1881. Anna had also immigrated with her family from Bohemia. Anna and Albrecht married. They had the following children:

(1) Edward Kenneth Loewit (1886-1970)
(2) George Washington Loewit (1889-1962)
(3) Rudolf Loewit (1891-1981)
(4) Elsie Loewit Remson (1897-1984)

Albrecht was a printer in New York City. He made calendars for professional people. One of those professional people was quite impressed with Albrecht's hard work. This person gave Albrecht the money to go to college to become a doctor. So in his 40s, Albrecht attended Columbia University in NYC, NY. He graduated as a doctor in 1900. Albrecht held his practice in his brownstone on 1833 Lexington Avenue. He later developed his own ointment called: "Dr. Loewit's Ointment". Albrecht also examined eyes. His son, George became an optometrist. Optometry stayed in the Loewit family and the family has a 4th generation optometrist.

Albrecht was a lover of antiques. When he was not in his office then he was found in a local antique store.
