Mary E. Richards was the daughter of Shadrach Richards and Chloe Steagal. She married William Wiley Woody in Franklin Co VA. The Richards and the Woody families lived in the Rocky Mount/Sontag/Sydnorsville area, and were good friends.

She was also the cousin of Mary Catherine Richards [who married Joseph Willis Woody Sr.]. Shadrach, her father, was the brother of King David Richards, Mary Catherine Richards' father.
